About The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation

The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation was launched by Sir Bobby in 2008 to help find more effective ways to detect and treat cancer. Patrons include Alan Shearer, Niall Quinn, Steve Gibson, Delia Smith, Mick Mills and Steve Harper.

Working within the NHS and in partnership with other leading charities and organisations, we fund cutting-edge cancer treatment and innovative cancer support services, directly benefiting cancer patients from across North East England and Cumbria.

As Sir Bobby hoped it would, our work significantly contributes to national and international research into the disease. He described launching his Foundation as, “like being at the helm of a team again.”

With the wonderful ongoing support of our fundraisers, Sir Bobby’s family, our patrons and expert medical trustees, we are continuing Sir Bobby’s wishes today.

Sir Bobby’s first goal in launching his Foundation was to raise £500,000 to equip what became the Sir Bobby Robson Cancer Trials Research Centre, where patients undertake trials of new cancer drugs. The centre, at the Northern Centre for Cancer Care, was opened by Sir Bobby in 2009 and we continue to fund posts for a specialist doctor and nurse in it.

Recently Funded Items

Recent projects include:

  • A contribution of £1million for four new posts within the Innovative Therapies for Children with Cancer Unit, which has doctors, nurses and research staff based at the Great North Children’s Hospital and Newcastle University’s Wolfson Childhood Cancer Research Centre.
  • A contribution of £985,000 to fund COLO-SPEED, a bowel cancer research and treatment project involving NHS endoscopy units from across the region.
  • A contribution of £892,000 to fund the cutting-edge PROSPECT-NE genome sequencing project in Newcastle
  • The creation of The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation Clinical Trials Design Team, funded by a £433,838 grant, which helps answer important questions about cancer by ensuring research is designed in the best way possible. Based at Newcastle University, the new team, works with cancer researchers to design and develop new trials.
