Great North Run Solo
With the Great North Run postponed until 2021, why not take part in GNR Solo; a new challenge to get involved in and raise money for charity!
If you would like to support our NHS Heroes and patients at Newcastle Hospitals choose Newcastle Hospitals NHS Charity as your charity of choice and encourage friends and family to sponsor you to complete the challenge.
The Great North Run Solo challenge starts on 28 June (the birthday of the Great North Run) and runs until 13 September, the day the 40th Great North Run was scheduled to take place.
To complete the challenge and claim a special edition Great North Run Solo medal, runners need to complete a minimum 40 runs of any distance over 78 days – a run for each year of the Great North run!
Complete 40 runs in 78 days- You can run at any pace and distance comfortable for you. Every runner who completes a minimum of 40 runs to finish the challenge will receive a special edition Great North Run Solo medal and certificate.
Optional Cumulative Distance over your 40 Runs
There are three distance levels, depending on how far you have run over your 40 (or more) runs we will award you a bronze, silver or gold finisher memento which you can download and share with pride.
Bronze – 100 Miles
Silver – 200 miles
Gold – 300 miles
Track your runs, then at the end of the challenge, simply return to log your results and confirm you’ve completed the challenge by uploading evidence of your activity over the challenge period.
You can join at any time up to 31 July when entries close.
GNR Solo for Youngsters- 13 Runs in 14 days
For younger runners, there is a junior challenge available. The Junior Great Run Solo starts on 31 August. Simply log 13 runs of any distance in the 14 days leading up to what would have been the Great North Run on 13 September. You can run at any pace and distance over the period, simply track your activity and upload your results at the end of the challenge.
It costs £10 to join, and ALL PROFITS will go to the NHS Charities Together COVID-19 Urgent Appeal.
How it works
- Enter Great North Run Solo on the Great North Run website.
- Choose a charity to fundraise for and set up a Just Giving page
- Start running from 28 June
- Keep a track of your runs and total distance
- Complete by 13th September
- Log your results to confirm you’ve completed the challenge

Your Race Reimagined- The Virtual Great North Run
On Sunday 13 September the GNR have organised an official 13.1 mile virtual race to participate in. The aim is to make it as close an experience as possible to the real event so that you’ll be inspired to lace up your trainers and complete the 13.1 miles.
The Official Virtual Great North Run will be available to enter free of charge, regardless of whether you had a place in this year’s Great North Run.
You can fundraise for charity and ask friends and family to sponsor you to complete the virtual challenge. If you would like to fundraise for Newcastle Hospitals get in touch with our charity team by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org
