North East law firm, Sintons has announced a £5,000 donation to support the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation’s major public campaign, helping to fund a new world-class cancer research hub at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne.

The Sir Bobby Robson Institute, a landmark £30 million facility is currently under construction following the breaking of ground in spring 2026. The three-storey centre will merge and expand the hospital’s current cancer research and clinical trials team – aiming to dramatically increase early cancer drug trials, directly benefiting patients across the North East, North Cumbria and North Yorkshire and having a positive global impact.

Sir Bobby famously referred to his foundation, part of Newcastle Hospitals Charity, as ’his last and greatest team,’ and this latest funding drive aims to raise the final funds needed to fully equip and finish the pioneering building.

As a firm deeply embedded in the North East community with a specialist healthcare department, Sintons is proud to back this vital regional legacy.

Christopher Welch, Managing Partner at Sintons, said: “Sir Bobby Robson remains an absolute icon across the North East, and the foundation he launched has created a legacy of hope that has transformed cancer care for countless families.

“As a firm with deep roots in this region and a specialist commitment to the healthcare sector, we are immensely proud to support the creation of the Sir Bobby Robson Institute. This £5,000 donation is our way of playing a small part in Sir Bobby’s ‘last and greatest team’ and helping to secure world-class cancer research facilities right here on our doorstep.”

Shelley Brunsdon, Corporate Fundraising Lead at Newcastle Hospitals Charity, said: “We’re incredibly grateful to Sintons for their generous donation towards the Sir Bobby Robson Institute.

“Support from leading regional businesses like Sintons is vital as we enter the final stages of making this world-class cancer research and clinical trials hub a reality. This facility will make a profound, lasting impact on patient care, clinical trials, and cancer innovation for generations to come across our region and beyond.”

The Sir Bobby Robson Institute will unite leading clinical and research teams to accelerate the journey from scientific discovery to lifesaving patient treatments.
