Great North Children’s Hospital Fund (GNCH Fund)
As the official charity for The Great North Children’s Hospital, we support the children, young people and their families who come to The Great North Children’s Hospital for treatment and care, making their experience the best it possibly can be.
How we support the hospital
Hospitals can often be a scary place and thanks to our generous supporters and fundraisers we fund a range of projects to help make the hospital more welcoming for children, dedicated to supporting their needs. We also help fund lifechanging research, cutting-edge equipment and technology so the clinical and research teams at the Great North Children’s Hospital can deliver better care to their patients.
An excellent example is our Arts Programme which aims to enhance the wellbeing and recovery of patients across Newcastle Hospitals.

“It made the time go really fast and I can’t wait to show people my picture”. (Child)
“It has been so fabulous seeing the impact that the sessions have had. The children have been talking about it and we have used some of the artwork to help them in clinic…we have seen a huge impact.” (Clinical Team)

“I used to ride my bike and go to the library. I miss that. But now you come to me with the stories.” (Child)
“This is such a special thing to have in the hospital. We love stories! (Parent/carer)
About The Great North Children’s Hospital (GNCH)
The Great North Children’s Hospital is one of the largest children’s hospitals in the UK. Thousands of children and young people from across the North East and Cumbria and beyond benefit from the specialist services provided here.
Part of the Royal Victoria Infirmary, The Great North Children’s Hospital has 245 beds and has the most extensive range of children’s services outside of London, including allergy, respiratory, orthopaedics, cardiology and cancer services. As an internationally leading research centre, clinicians work side by side with research staff to continually improve treatments for all childhood diseases.
History
There is a long history of support for Children’s services and the Children’s Hospital. Initially known as the Fleming Charity, The Great North Children’s Hospital Fund was set up in 2016 by Dr Mike McKean and the members of the Newcastle Hospitals Charity.
The aim of the Fund was to clearly link the charity to the hospital and support all aspects of its clinical work, which includes work that benefits patients beyond the walls of Great North Children’s Hospital.
