Our outstanding Great North Children’s Hospital

The Great North Children’s Hospital (GNCH) is one of the four largest Children’s hospitals in the UK. They provide a full range of tailored children’s health services to children from across the north of England and beyond. Annually 32,000 children attend as inpatients, 44,000 children visit our Paediatric Emergency Department, 150,000 children have outpatient appointments and 15,000 attend as day cases. They are the only children’s tertiary and training hospital in England to be rated ‘Outstanding’ by the Quality and Care Commission.
It has special wards, operating theatres, outpatients, day case suites and an A&E department all tailored to children, their families and carers.
Its young patients include thousands of local children from the North East and Cumbria as well as those who travel with their families from across the country, and even the world, to benefit from the GNCH’s specialist services.
History

There is a long history of support for Children’s services and the Children’s Hospital.
Initially known as the Fleming charity, The Great North Children’s Hospital Foundation was set up in 2016 by Dr Mike McKean and the members of the Newcastle Hospitals Charity.
The aim of the Foundation was to clearly link the charity to the hospital and support all aspects of its clinical work, which includes work that benefits patients beyond the walls of Great North Children’s Hospital.
How our Foundation is making a difference

Donations to the Great North Children’s Hospital Foundation support the many children and their families who come to our hospital for treatment and care, making their experience the best it possibly can be.
Innovations that really make a difference to our patients and staff including life changing research, cutting-edge equipment and technology are funded by donations along with initiatives to support the wellbeing and development of our staff.
Evidence shows that children have a quicker recovery when they are in an environment they enjoy and we strive to make GNCH as welcoming and friendly as it can be.
Donations also help us pay for the little things that make a big difference to our children including:
- Toys
- Playrooms/Chill-out areas
- Enrichment activities
- Murals
- Clown Doctors
- Music Lessons
