Are you a member of staff at Newcastle Hospitals and interested in learning about photography from renowned artist, Johannah Churchill? Do you enjoy making in your spare time, or have a creative hobby? Do you have a hobby that keeps you well, fills you with joy and you’d like to share?
This year Newcastle Hospitals Charity Arts Programme is collaborating with the Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art (NGCA) Sunderland, as part of their upcoming exhibition Come As You Really Are with artist Hetain Patel and Artangel, which will showcase makers and modifiers, crafters and collectors.

Online Event: In conversation with Johannah Churchill
Find out more about Johannah’s photographic practice as she joins, Katie Newell, Head of Arts Programmes, in conversation. They will cover a variety of topics, including advice for budding photographers, and what it is like making the move from practising nurse, to capturing NHS staff through a different lens. They will talk about the unique opportunity this year, to share your creative hobbies and collections with a wider public in an NGCA gallery.

Open Call: for all Trust staff
There are limited spaces available for staff to take part in our exciting ongoing project, NHS Darkroom with Johannah Churchill, a photographer and nurse, who studied with Northumbria University Newcastle and trained at Freeman Hospital 2007-10. Johannah is also currently Lecturer in Contemporary Photography, at the University of Sunderland.
Selected staff (drawn randomly) will have the opportunity to sit for a professional portrait taken by Johannah, as well as taking part in a photography workshop to develop your own images of your collections and creative hobbies. Your portrait and own photographs will then feature in a public exhibition!
You can see some of Johannah’s previous work with NHS staff here and her recent works in the Freeman, where she trained as a nurse, and in the Leazes Wing, RVI.
All materials are provided, and it is free to take part. To be involved you need to be able to commit to the following:
- Taking part in an in-person photography workshop to make polaroids of objects that represent your creative hobby and try your hand at making cyanotypes at Sunderland University campus, where you will also have your portrait taken by Johannah.
One full day (Thursday 10 April 2025)
- Staff prints and portraits displayed at Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art Collection Space and across Trust sites (17 May – 6 July 2025)
- Taking part in a post-project de-brief – 45 mins online (12:00-12:45 8 July 2025)
