The organisers of the Great North Run have made an announcement on changes to the route of the event on 12 September 2021.
They have said that the changes are a direct response to the Pandemic and are being brought in to keep participants safe.
You can experience this new route this year only and run through the City of Newcastle and across the Tyne Bridge not once but twice!
Places are only available through Charities for 2021 and Newcastle Hospitals Charity, the official Charity of Newcastle Hospitals has limited Charity places left for the event.
By running for our Charity your support makes an impact with projects like the following:

- Toys and activity pack for our young patients

“As we emerge from the Pandemic we want to ensure the resilience of this year’s event and have therefore made some significant changes to the usual 13.1 mile route.
The adjustments will allow you to fully enjoy the experience, whilst also ensuring that you are able to socially distance both at the event and on the region’s transport network before and after you take part.
The race will now start and finish in Newcastle with runners crossing the Tyne Bridge twice. The route will take in the City Centre on the return leg, before finishing on the Great North Road with the finishers village being built on the Town Moor.
- The distance remains at 13.1 miles
- The start line, as always, will be located on the central motorway in Newcastle upon Tyne
- You will run across the Tyne Bridge, not once… But twice!
- You’ll make your way through Newcastle’s city centre on your return leg
- The new finish line will be located on the Great North Road in Newcastle upon Tyne
- You will be able to enjoy our usual finisher’s village, which will now be on the city’s Town Moor
- These changes are a direct response to the pandemic, and we look forward to returning to South Shields again in the future
The character, spirit and atmosphere of the event will still very much be present, and we’re working on some exciting plans to ensure you have the best experience from start to finish.
Further details on the changes will be sent to participants as a priority as they are confirmed, over the coming weeks.”
