We were very proud to be chosen by not one, but two generous people who wished to leave a gift in their Wills – Alan and Thelma Scrivens from Darras Hall.
Married for 52 years, the couple met through friends and enjoyed a very happy life together. Alan worked for the CEGB and, after retirement, volunteered to take schoolchildren on guided tours around Blyth Power Station, while Thelma was secretary to the head partner at Merz and McLellan Consulting Engineers.
Very sadly, three years ago, the devoted pair both died from cancer within just five months of each other. Together, they left an extremely generous bequest for Newcastle Hospitals Charity leaving an incredible £771,000 in support of the work of the Sir Bobby Robson Cancer Trials Research Centre at the Northern Centre for Cancer Care.
After they passed away and the estate was finalised, their close friends Maureen and Duncan Lee fulfilled their generous last wishes and came to the Freeman Hospital to hand over the cheque in person to Professor Ruth Plummer, Director of the Sir Bobby Robson Cancer Centre.
Maureen said: “Meeting with Professor Plummer felt like the right thing to do for Alan and Thelma. We wanted to come along to the hospital to find out more about the work that will be funded thanks to our friends’ generosity, and she was able to talk to us in depth about the amazing work of the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.
“Alan and Thelma wanted to leave a legacy that would help other people locally who are facing cancer. I know they thought a lot of Sir Bobby and the work of his Foundation because we all talked about it together. In fact, my husband, Duncan, and I have also chosen to make a bequest to the Foundation in our will. It’s really one of the best things you can do because you know it will make an enormous difference in the lives of others.”
